Enzo Maresca has been advised that Nicolas Jackson is not the long-term solution for Chelsea if they aspire to win major trophies. The Senegal striker’s struggles in front of goal were evident in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Tuesday at Stamford Bridge.
Jackson assisted Cole Palmer’s 13th-minute goal, but Chelsea’s defensive lapses allowed Justin Kluivert to equalize from the penalty spot, and Antoine Semenyo’s sixth goal of the season put Bournemouth ahead.
Captain Reece James salvaged a point with a dramatic 95th-minute equalizer, avoiding Chelsea’s third loss in five league matches.
Despite their relief, Chelsea’s winless streak now stretches to five league games. The Blues trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by ten points and sit just two points above fifth-placed Newcastle United, who have a game in hand.
Jackson, 23, started the season strong but has gone a month without scoring, missing key opportunities against Bournemouth, including hitting the post and side-netting. Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley believes Jackson lacks the consistency required to lead a title-challenging team.
“Jackson has shown more positives than negatives this season,” Burley told ESPN. “But he’s like Kai Havertz at Arsenal—a player suited for the bench or cup matches.
Chelsea needs a world-class No. 9, and while Jackson has exceeded expectations, he’s not the next Drogba. Teams competing for titles need someone more reliable.”
Liverpool legend Steve Nicol echoed Burley’s concerns, arguing that Jackson’s missed chances have cost Chelsea crucial points. “He’s done better than expected, but Chelsea needs a consistent finisher to step up and challenge for trophies,” Nicol said.
Maresca shared his frustration after the match, emphasizing Chelsea’s inability to capitalize on their dominance. “We should’ve scored three goals in the first half,” he told BBC Sport.
“The game was in our control, but after the penalty, we dropped off. That’s something we need to fix. We’re creating chances but not converting them, which is a big concern.”
Chelsea faces a crucial Premier League clash against Wolves on Monday before taking on struggling champions Manchester City later this month. Whether Jackson can overcome his critics and deliver consistent performances remains to be seen.
