Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were left out of Manchester United’s squad for their Premier League clash against Manchester City, a surprising decision that sent shockwaves through fans.
Manager Ruben Amorim opted for a front three of Amad Diallo, Rasmus Hojlund, and Mason Mount, leaving no room for Rashford or Garnacho, not even on the bench.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the lineup leaked a day earlier, and both forwards participated in training on Sunday morning.
Amorim defended his decision, insisting it was purely performance-based. “We evaluate everything: training, match performances, teamwork, attitude. I make my selection based on those factors,” Amorim explained to Sky Sports.
“It’s not about sending a message. The players understand my decision. Everything matters—how you eat, prepare, and interact. It’s all part of my evaluation process.”
Manchester United legend Roy Keane supported Amorim’s stance, suggesting the omissions stemmed from poor attitudes and underwhelming form.
“He’s clearly seen something he doesn’t like—whether it’s training, effort, or attitude,” Keane said. “It’s a bold decision, but not surprising given how they’ve been playing.”
Rashford, in particular, has come under heavy criticism. After starting against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League, he was substituted early, walking off without acknowledging his manager.
Ex-Premier League striker Troy Deeney questioned Rashford’s mindset in a Sun column: “Rashford looks burdened, as if everything is someone else’s fault.
His attitude stinks, and while he still produces moments of magic, it’s never consistent.”
Deeney added, “This cycle repeats: a new manager comes in, Rashford plays well for a few matches, then slips back into his old ways. Amorim already seems frustrated with him.”
Rashford’s numbers reflect his inconsistency. Despite scoring four goals in 15 league games this season, his performances have lacked sharpness.
He’s also netted twice in the Carabao Cup and once in the Europa League but hasn’t made a lasting impact.
With mounting pressure on United, Amorim’s decision is a bold attempt to send a clear message to his squad—consistent performance and professionalism are non-negotiable.
Whether Rashford and Garnacho respond positively remains to be seen.
