This ruling follows an investigation by CAF’s disciplinary committee, which found Libya guilty of subjecting the Nigerian national team to inhumane treatment during their travels.
Reports indicated that the Nigerian players and officials faced significant challenges while attempting to reach Libya for the AFCON qualifier.
They were stranded for several hours at a Libyan airport and were denied basic necessities such as food and internet access, which created a distressing situation ahead of the match.
In a related announcement, CAF has also fined Libya $50,000 for their actions. Troost-Ekong took to Twitter to commend the ruling, stating,
“JUSTICE: CAF awards three points and three goals to Nigeria. Libya fined $50,000.” He expressed his satisfaction with the decision, emphasizing that Nigeria’s choice to refuse to play under such circumstances was ultimately vindicated.
Troost-Ekong elaborated on the challenging conditions faced by the Super Eagles, mentioning,
“The plane was diverted 300km from the scheduled airport, even when the pilot informed them he was low on fuel.”
He concluded his statement with optimism, noting, “One step closer to our target AFCON 2025,” highlighting the importance of the points gained in their pursuit of success in the upcoming tournament.
As the Super Eagles prepare for the next stage of qualifiers, this decision from CAF marks a significant moment in their campaign for AFCON 2025.
