Bayer 04 Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso provided an update on Nigerian striker Victor Okoh Boniface after the team’s troubling experience in Libya. The 23-year-old, along with the Nigerian squad, traveled to Libya for their AFCON 2025 qualifying match but faced significant issues, being redirected to an airport 300 km away from their intended destination. Once they landed, players and staff were stranded in the terminal for over 14 hours without food or internet access.

While Boniface and his teammates have since returned to their clubs, not all are in peak condition due to the ordeal. Ahead of Leverkusen’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt, Alonso expressed uncertainty about Boniface’s fitness to start. He emphasized the unpleasantness of the situation and stated, “We’ll see tomorrow. If he can play, that means he’s feeling better. That’s the most important thing.”

Currently sitting 6th in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen could move to joint top with a win against Die Adler at the Bay Arena today.
